That is not only a practical idea, but a great idea. This way, they can buy store bought dresses, and be able to wear them again. As a gift, you can give the girls matching accessories, and that would unify their looks.

Anything goes these days at weddings. I think it is kinda cool to see everyone in a different style of dress but it has to be all the same colors. Everyone is shaped different and one dress may look great on one but horrible the next. some may prefer to wear a long dress, some may prefer short dresses. go to davidsbridal.com if you haven't already. it gives you an idea on mix and match seperates.

Well the black is tacky and gross. The idea of choosing a colour and having the bridesmaids choose a dress that suits them best is an awesome idea. I've seen pics of this, and it looks really great.

I think that would be fine. Maybe you can just get the same skirt for everyone at a particular place and let them pick their top. Just specify the color and tell them to get it just one color, no patterns.

That is completely up to you, when i got married we did not have the money for dresses in fact my wedding dress was a gift from a friends mom who got a used one for real cheap and then made alterations to it and fixed it up to make it beautiful. As for my bridesmaids they were all simply asked to wear blue dresses. It turned out to be a good idea, I got the color that I wanted and they all got to show their own style so nobody got stuck wearing something that they hated. I think that its a good idea to just have them color coordinate and accesorize. It saves you money that you probably can not afford and will make things simpler.

i think what you have planned is a fantastic idea!

first and foremost, you can't expect all your bridesmaids to look good in the same style dress. I think it's absolutely ridiculous when people have all strapless dresses (for example) and one woman weigh 120lbs and looks great in it, one who has a huge boobs looks slutty, and one who is top heavy doesn't feel comfortable in it!

i think same color is fine, in fact, i dont think it should be any other way, but to fit different size women in the same exact dress...silly!!

Goo luck!

I did that same thing - black dresses of their choice. It looked fine & they could wear them again and they loved it!

Honey-it's anything BUT tacky. Who wants to spend a lot of money on a bridesmaid dress anyway- there are more important things to splurge on. I say go for it!

It is perfectly acceptable to pick a color but keep in mind people will wear all kinds of different things to your wedding. you may want to pick a material and get them all to customize the dress itself. It needs to be something that will distinguish them from anyone else.

You're just experiencing one aspect of a very common problem.

It would be very unusual to have black for a wedding, but you could easily do white with black accessories and make sure that "white" really meant white, not cream or whatever. You might need to give a sample piece of material of what you meant by white so that they could match as closely as possible.

There's a lot to be said for your idea as it lets each girl choose something to suit herself. There's always a problem with dresses in that no two people are the same shape, and a dress style that suits a busty girl and lets her show off her assets will drive a flat-chested girl to despair because she has no assets to display and can't even hide the fact with a gel bra or whatever because the dress hasn't enough coverage so she ends up with her flat chest on display.

Go ahead, but think seriously about white (with black accessories if necessary).
